Welcome to the seventh issue of Libram Novus. In this huge, 29 page issue, we are going to start off with rules for creating your own races, and then show you how we made the PC and monster races for Novus, and then to round things out we will give you a couple of example races made using these same rules.

Some of the new races we give you make for good monster races, so we give you the monster stat blocks for them as well.

Then we introduce Kindred Talents. This is a system that allows the GM to make specific racial talents for his setting, allowing such things as a Half-Dwarf/Half-Gnome or a Lizardman/Halfling/Human crossbreed, or many other possible combinations. We round this out by giving you examples for 14 races (PC and Monster), and give you a very Special Kindred Talent, the Dragon-kin!

Just click on the cover image to the right to be taken to the product page on RPGNow!

It is simple. I tried to sign up to be part of the GM Day Sale being held on DriveThruRPG/RPGNow, but there was a glitch (i.e. I screwed something up somehow) and Firehawk Games wasn’t added to the list. Therefore, after a short discussion with them, I have decided to run my own sale. It will last until March 24th at the very least, and possibly a few days longer as I am wanting this sale to be posted in the next Drunken Goblin announcement as well.

Inn this issue, we start off with a large article called Playing with Skill that covers both many types of Crafting and Herbcraft. Additionally, we add a new type of magical item, Herbal Elixirs, that is also created using herbs.

Next up, we introduce the concept of Training Paths. These are goals that players can use to unlock Talents and other benefits.

Firehawk’s good friend, Jason Brisbane has created a Novus Character App for Android devices! You can find it on Google Play

And here is a note from its creator!

Welcome one and all!

The First Official Novus Character App has now been released!

- It allows you to create your own characters, delete old ones, or simply to view “Marcus” the fighter from the Quick Start Guide (Thanks Guys!). - You can backup and restore the database, which by default, backs up and reads from an SD card. - Plenty of space for character notes as well as In-Game Notes (Thats my favourite feature!) - Combat details, including weapons, gear, spells, and skills are on a separate icon to make things a little easier! - A Help file is viewable from the main screen.

Note: If you are one of the two people who have downloaded this from the marketplace preior to this version, then you have two options: - if you have created your own character/s or modified Marcus, then you can choose to leave it as is. - If you want to see all Marcus’ skills and dont care about the previous data, then please clear the cache before running this program. It will auto restore the database back to defaults.

Finally, this was created by a Fan for the fans. I am going to give this version about a week or so to shake out, for last minute typos to be found and then I will release the final version once those last minute typo corrections are made.

In this version, we reworded a number of things to increase clarity overall. However, there are a couple of changes that I feel need to be mentioned…

Firing Into Melee – This has been rewritten to make it simpler overall. The ooriginal rules for this were extremely over complicated and one of the playtesters made some comments in the forums which allowed me to com up with these simpler rules.

Base Damage – This change came about thanks to some suggestions and feedback from Dan Davenport (who has done many reviews over on rpg.net and who is going to review Novus. In short, this change adds the stat bonus of the Combat Skill used in an attack to what used to be called Base Damage (renamed to Damage Rating) in order to create what is currently called “Base Damage.”

Monsters - One of the things that I did, finally, was to codify (behind the scenes, at least) how the amount of damage that a monster does is determined. This also includes determining Starting Hits and Racial Max Hits; all to be determined by the size of the creature (and the size of its attacks for damage dealt). This means that hit points and damage dealt by a number of monsters have been updated accordingly.

So, version 0.8 of the Novus Open has just been released. I have already stated that it is going to be the last version of the Open Beta, and that the next release will be the final, live and finished version.

So, what comes next?

Actually, I have several things in the fire right now.

Final Version of Novus

Yes, the final version of Novus is only a week or two away. But why am I not giving an exact date?

The answer to that is simple, I cannot give an exact date because I am waiting on certain things to happen that are not under my control. In short, I am waiting for my soon to be Imprint Partner.

Yesterday, I shipped off the contracts to him. Once he receives them, he will sign and send me back a copy. Additionally, he will send me the imprint logo, UPC code, and credit page text for Novus. Also, I will make a formal announcement of our partnership once he has been able to sign the contracts.

But what exactly is an Imprint Partner?

Basically, he will be producing print versions of Novus. Print versions that will be going into the standard RPG distribution channels and thus possibly getting into stores near you. I say possibly because it still requires distributors to carry the book(s) and retailers to purchase them for their stores, none of which is ever guaranteed, unless your company is one of the two 800 lb gorillas in the room.

This contract is also a good thing in other ways, as my soon to be partner also has contacts for the possibility of getting Novus translated into other languages for my European audience.

Novus Hârn Guide

One of current projects is creating a free PDF that will make it easy to use Novus when plaing in and utilizing the Hârn setting by Columbia Games.

I already have Columbia’s blessing to create the Guide, and they will get final approval over it to make sure that it fits well enough.

Creating this Guide, however, is a slow process. as I am working into other tasks and projects I am working, or need to work on before I finish this.

Libram Novus

The Libram Novus PDFs are a place where I can put options and/or additions that didn’t make it into the core rules.

So far, I have had one issue detail the spell creation rules, not to mention the addition of the Spell Bases as something that Mages can aspire to learn. The most recent issue gave the Class creation rules, and lots of additional Talents for players to have fun with.

In many other games, including some I have worked on in the past, you had Training Packages. With a Training Package, the player paid a cost (usually in Character or Development Points) and then got a whole bunch of skills for free. I was never fully happy with that sort of setup, as it is quite often unbalancing, regardless of the game it is used in.

I was considering them for Novus, but didn’t like the idea too much because it changes the balance of the game and that was something that I didn’t want to do. Then I came upon the idea of turning it around. In stead of buying the package to get the skill ranks, why not require the skill ranks to buy the package. Then instead of being a package, it becomes a path towards reaching a specific goal.

And also, the Path can be focused on other benefits that boil down to a single word, Access.

In short, when a Path is purchased (which can only be done if you meet the basic requirements for listed skill ranks), it grants the player access to something he normally doesn’t have access to. It might be a new friend/contact that could provide aid or information at some later point. It could be membership in a guild that provides access to specialized training (such as for a Mage’s Guild and spell research). It could be access to a Talent that is normally not listed as being Trainable (a secret sect of Martial Artists teach a highly secret technique allowing them to externalize their chi in order to make an Innate Ranged Attack. Joining this sect (the goal of the Path) doesn’t automatically give them the Talent, but it does change it to being Trainable for the character, allow him to purchase it at some point in the future.

In the next issue, I am also planning on introducing one or two new Classes. These classes will be Semi Adepts, characters that combine skill at arms and skill at magic in a limited, specialized manner.

And later on, we will even be consolidating these into compendiums so that they can be printed and also placed into the distribution chain.

Tyrlon

Also on my plate of things to get done is the core setting for Novus completed. I already have the map for Tyrlon done as well as the map for the city of Argus on Tyrlon. Both may be found in earlier posts on this site.

Tyrlon is going to be an exciting setting because it allows for nearly anything and is specifically designed to require and allow for adventurers to be roaming about. There are plenty of wilderness areas that need exploring.

And Beyond

Beyond these few things, I have plenty of other ideas and projects that are just waiting to be developed. There is a sci-fi version of Novus (tentatively to be called Stellar Novus), and I have a multi-level type of game in the works as well (dueling card game, which becomes a flexible board game, which becomes a small compact rpg). I also have about have a dozen or more additional setting ideas that can be explored.

But as I implied, all of these are far on down the road from now…

This will be the final Open Beta.

The next release of Novus will be the final, non-Beta version. The version that will be added to OneBookShelf’s RPGNow website as a POD product and that will also be sent to our imprint partner (official announcement is waiting until he actually receives the signed contracts, they went off in today’s mail). Our imprint partner will be able to get Novus into the distribution system, allowing it to be found in local game stores within a few months. He will also be working towards getting Novus translated into other languages for the European markets.

Over all it is very exciting!

As for the changes in version 0.8, they are very small. We reworked (i.e. made more balanced) the Weapon Kata talent and simplified the rules for Firing into Melee. Additionally, we added a Dispel Magic spell to the Universal Spells section.

The only other changes were very mild by comparison, changing out some art, for the upcoming print versions, and a number of typo fixes.

Enjoy!

You can now go to your RPGNow or DriveThruRPG account and re-download the file to get the latest version.

This update contains a number of fixes and corrections,to a number of different areas. Below is a partial list of those many changes and corrections:

Renamed The Mage

We have renamed the core Mage, to be Mage (Classic) and other than this, he is still a practitioner of a single School of Magic. He was renamed so that I could more easily include the next item.

Added New Class

We did not have any Classes that utilized the Minor Adept talent, and there was some confusion among the playtesters and others who have gotten Novus on how exactly that should work.

Class Changes

Due to some other changes made (see Combat Moves entry below), we had to rework some minor aspects to many of the Classes. Gone is the bit about altering the costs of Combat Moves, and in its place is a bit about how many Combat Moves you may learn per number of ranks you have in your Combat Skills.

Speed

We have clarified that Speed also includes quickness, and agility and how the character moves his whole body, as opposed to Dexterity which exemplifies Manual Dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Stat Generation

We are back up to 3 Generation Methods.

Random – We have changed the random method to allow for a more even spread across the board.

Point Buy – We have added in a simple Point Buy method. And the costs for increasing stats is, thanks to one of the playtesters, based on the way skill costs work. 1 point to increase a stat by 1 point for each of the first 5 points, and then 3 points to increase a stat by 1 point after that. And you get 35 points in total to Spend.

Stat Block - We have adjusted the Stat Block to better match the Point Buy system.

Final Adjustments – This is based on the Point Buy, and regardless of which method you used above, you can make final adjustments to your stats. For each point you decrease a stat by, you gain 1 point. And then you increase stats using the same cost schema as for the Point Buy method.

Fate Points

We have added several new ways for players to spend Fate Points. Some of these ways give minor narrative control to the player and overall, I think that they will help make players more involved with the game overall.

Skills

We have changed the stat used with a couple of skills. This is in keeping with the clarification of the Speed Stat.

Talents

We have added a couple of Talents for Mounted Combat, and one called Agile Defense, which allows for lightly armored swashbuckler types to be more viable. We have also removed the Advanced Martial Arts talent because it was no longer needed, due to the reworking of the Combat Moves and Combat Styles.

Starting Equipment

We now have a list of basic starting equipment that every character receives, with variations based on the Character’s Class.

Combat Move

There are now a lot more Melee and Unarmed Combat Moves, as well as a few more Ranged Combat Moves (there isn’t a whole lot that can be done with ranged attacks). These Moves were all built using a Combat Move Design System that allows us to keep them relatively balanced. Combat Moves (along with Combat Styles) are what will attract non-spell-users in the run, I think. Combat Moves must be learned separately for each Combat Skill – though there are some Basic ones that every skill gets for free. (Note: This is one of the two major changes to the system)

Combat Styles

With the reworking and rebuilding of Combat Moves, it only made sense to start over with the Combat Styles as well. Now, the Styles give a discount on those Moves associated with the Style. You can always learn additional Moves for your Style, but those will cost full price. (Note: This is one of the two major changes to the system)

Spells – Casting Options

This isn’t actually a change, since it doesn’t change how things worked previously, it is a simple addition to the rules. One that doesn’t invalidate the rules for modifying existing spells from Libram Novus #1 using Spell Bases, so it actually fills in a small niche between prior versions of the core rules and the rules from Libram Novus #1. Basically, most of the spells are given options that the player can choose at the time of casting. There is no limit on which options can be included (so long as you are an Adept of some type – non-spell-users who learn spells cannot use the Casting Options), so long as you have the Spell Points available and can cast the spell (i.e. roll equal to or over the adjusted Casting TN for the spell. What options you select/use are completely up to you. And you use simple addition to determine the new Casting TN and Spell Point costs.

Monsters – Saving Throw

In addition to alphabetizing the stats for the monsters (again – somehow, they reverted to their original order in version 0.6), we have added in their Saving Throw modifier as well. Now, a Stat entry for a monster looks like this:

Stats:   Chr: 9(-1)/4; Con: 17(2)/7; Dex: 10(0)/5;
          Int: 2(-3)/2; Spd: 13(1)/6; Str: 23(4)/9;
          Will: 12(0)/5; Wis: 10(0)/5

Monsters – Undead

The Undead are anow all collected into a single sub-section, much like the Demons, Devils, and Dragons already were. Additionally, we have added both a Ghoul and a Vampire Spawn to the list of Undead available. This should keep things a bit more interesting…

Most of the changes, weren’t actually changes to the rules, per se, but expansions on already existing bits and bobs.

Stats:   Chr: 9(-1)/4; Con: 17(2)/7; Dex: 10(0)/5;
          Int: 2(-3)/2; Spd: 13(1)/6; Str: 23(4)/9;

Well, I have finally finished updating the spells and adding casting options to all of them.

Just a few more things and I should be ready to start pagemaking the next verion. Undead, Combat Moves and Stat Blocks, oh my!

Undead

Well I have moved all of the Undead into a single section, and right now, I am contemplating adding one or two more Undead creatures to round things out a little bit. Afterall, I do have 5 Demons and 5 Devils, so perhaps I should have 5 Undead as well. Currently, I have Ghosts, Skeleton Warriors, and Zombies.

I was thinking that perhaps a Barrow Wight and maybe a Ghoul would make for good additions.

Combat Moves

Well, I had already been contemplating adding more Combat Moves to the rules, the better to fill out those pages. And the more that I thought about it, the more that I realized that I was unhappy with some of them and how the Combat Styles were built.

So right now, I am thinking about redoing how Combat Styles are built, and making them a little more uniform in their design. This would aid in later product by making sure that future Combat Styles don’t go overboard, and reducing potential power creep in the future.

While I have not made any final decisions, I am leaning heavily towards adopting the things that I have laid out in this thread –> Potential Changes for Combat Moves.

Stat Blocks

In another thread on the forums, somebody recently had a question about what the Saving Throw bonuses for monsters were.

Those bonuses are figured in the same manner as for the player’s characters (5 + stat bonus). However, instead of making GMs do the math on the fly, I have decided to rework the stat blocks for the monsters a little bit so that they are included.

They now look as follows:

Con: 15(1)/6

This gives the stat name/abbreviation, and the Stat Value, with the Stat Bonus in parenthesis. This is then followed by a slash (/) and last is the actual Saving Throw bonus.

One of the reasons for making this change is that if, at some point, I include a monster who receive a bonus to a Saving Throw, it doesn’t have to be remembered and added in on the fly. We just include it in the stat block, and then explain it in the accompanying text.

As I continue to work through adding casting options to the spells in the core rulebook (I am over half way done upgrading the spells), I am also continuing to refine Novus and to look for other ways to improve it.

I had been hoping to have them all done by now, but the holidays have kind of slowed things down immensely, especially since my wife and son have both been home. My son out of school, and my, who works for the local school system, also out of school.

In the one post that I made, Open Beta v0.7 Update, I mentioned the biggest of the changes additions that I would be making and in a more recent post, Undead Update, I mentioned another addition to the update/change list for version 0.7 of the Novus Open Beta.

One addition that I missed was the inclusion of rules for Mounted Combat as well as for Firing into Melee. For Mounted Combat, I have added a couple of new Talents, and some rules in the Special Situations section of the Combat chapter of Novus. Firing into Melee is handled solely through the Special Situations section of the Combat chapter.

Stat Generation

Another change that I have decided to make is to expand Stat Generation back out to 3 methods.

Random: For this method, which can result in high stats across the board, or even result in low stats across the board, I have decided to change what is currently in the rules. We will be moving to a simple roll 2d10 (rerolling any die that results in a 1 or 2) 8 times, and then assign them as you like.

Point Buy: Each player will have 35 points to spend on their stats. All stats start with a value of 10. The player then raises the stats on a 1 point for 1 point basis as long as the given stat is lower than 15. If the stat is 15 or higher, then it costs 3 points to raise a stat by 1 point.

Stat Block: Similar to the current stat block found in the rules, it has been adjusted so that it also equals 35 point as if it had been purchased by the Point Buy methor.

Final Adjustments: A player may sometimes want one or more stats to be below average (i.e. kinda like Joxur from the Xena tv show). This allows the player to lower a given stat and to gain 1 point for every point that the stat is lowered. However, no stat may be reduced to lower than a 6. These points may then be spent, using the same costs as the Point Buy, to raise other stats. It doesn’t matter what stat generation method was used, any character may make these final adjustments, even the those who used the random generation method.

Training Packages

Something that I am considering, but have made no decisions about yet, is the inclusion of Training Packages. Right now, I am leaning towards making them optional, and including a dozen or so in core book.

I have a Training Package Poll (you need to be registered and logged in to join in the poll) on the forums, and would appreciate feedback.

Right now, the idea is that a Training Package would always cost 15 Character Points, and a character would never be allowed more than one of them, and that one would have to be acquired during character creation.

The Training Package would contain either 15 or 20 skill ranks across various specific skills. Background Packages often give vague ranks, such as 3 ranks in Comabt Skills and then the player decides which Combat Skills to put those ranks into. For Training Packages, every skill rank handed out would be specific.

Every Training Package would also come with “Contacts”. This means that characters would automatically have a greater connection to the setting as the package gave them friends, mentors, rivals, and maybe even an enemy or two. All to be filled in as required.

Some Training Packages may also have prerequisites. Such as being from a specific culture or race, or only being available to those of a certain Class.

While Training Package (TP) would never include Talents, they may include access to one or more Talents (thus allowing a Talent that was not normally Trainable to be Trainable for those who have the package. However, such access would only be available for a short while, and the Talent will have to be acquired during that period. For example, if the TP requires an Innate Attack talent that costs 20 points, the character would have no more than 3 levels in which to acquire that Talent. After that point, the character would lose any benefits of the TP, and possibly be hunted by others who have the TP as a renegade.

In purchasing such required Talents, the player would be allowed to spend any amount of CP each level to acquire the Talent, so long as he spent a minimum of 1 CP each level, and so long as the Talent is fully paid off in 3 levels.

More specifically, I started thinking about where they might come from, among other things.

What got me thinking about this specifically, was trying to come up with an additional spell or two for the School of Black Magic. I didn’t want to pull the spells out of Libram Novus #2, as that would kind of be cheating those who already purchased it.Doing a compilation later on is one thing, pulling extra spells into the core rules would be something else. And I figured that since Libram Novus #2 contained a spell for summoning Infernals (Demons & Devils), that perhaps I should add something regarding Undead to their repertoire.

One of the other things I have been thinking about is grouping. In the Creatures section of Novus, I have grouped together all of the Demons, all of the Devils, all of the Dragons, and all of the Spirits. But I haven’t done so for the Undead. I had not actually even thought about it until I started considering where the Undead came from, and about such things as unifying how Holy Water and Holy Oil should be affecting them. In the description for that spell, I basically said to see each entry, yet down in the spell for Divine Bolt, I had the effect be unified. And if I was going to unify the effects, then I needed to also group the Undead together so that I only had to explain it once.

And if I was only going to explain it once by grouping them together, then I needed a way to tie them all together, other than simply being Undead, and I got to thinking about where the Undead might come from…

Types of Undead

The way that I have come to view it, there are basically 3 types of Undead; Natural, Created, and Summoned.

Natural

Natural Undead are those that are created through the naturally occuring causes, such as how a violent death may create a Haunt or Ghost. Another method of Natural creation is through transmission. Some Undead, such as Zombies or Ghouls pass along something akin to an infection that creates more of that type of Undead when the infect dies. For certain, more powerful Undead, there is also the ability to sire additional Undead of the same time. Vampires are the ones who most commonly sire other of their ilk.

Created

Created Undead are those types that are created through the use of magical spells or rituals. Those who practice Black Magic may know spells to convert corpses into Zombies, or to summon and trap the spirt of a person, turning it into a Ghost or Haunt. In these cases, the spirit used to create the Undead is almost always unwilling, ripped from its current home to inhabit a dead body.

Summoned

This one was the most problematic. Where do the Undead who are summoned come from? Is there a little factory somewhere cranking them out as needed? Or perhaps, there is a specific plane of existance where they reside.

Purgatory, the Shadow Realms

Then I got to thinking. There is a war between Demons and Devils, often over the souls of those from the mortal realms. Now, what if the death of the mortal wasn’t the end of that war. What if there was a place, sort of like the Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Romulans in Star Trek, where the Demons and Devils could both go to access these souls. A Shadow Realm, perhaps sometimes called Purgatory, where the evil souls and/or evil spirits that form the Undead go and where they actually evolve into Undead of various types. Then when a spell caster throws a summoning spell to bring one forth, it is pulled from the Shadow Realms back to the mortal plane and then serves the caster who summoned them.

So, we have Demons and Devils who can both access the Shadow Realms, and they both want control over it, and the evil spirits and souls that reside there. This then explains their rivalry and animosity towards one another. However, let’s mix things up a bit more, shall we?

What if, the Shadow Realms has its own hierarchy as well. One that rivals, or comes close to rivaling that of the 9 Hells or the Abyss. Or perhaps several different hierarchies, one for each type of Undead. That makes things even more chaotic and interesting over all.

Of course, what I put into the core rules will be only the slimmest of overviews, but that will be the starting point for later development and pursuit.

Enough of my ramblings for now. I wish everybody a Happy Holidays (whatever those holidays might be), and a Happy New Year!

Currently, we have 2 distinct versions of Novus. The Free version and the Deluxe version. However, as I have always stated from the beginning, the Free version of Novus won’t always be Free. It will eventually morph into the Thrifty version.

However, having a Free version of Novus has been helpful, and I had been wanting some way to be able to keep a free version of the rules while still continuing along with my original plans for them.

That is where a minor website update that I made the other day comes into play…

Updates & Plugins

Earlier this week, I added pages to the website for Libram Novus, and in doing so, I re-organized the site slightly by removing the Novus pages from the main menu and creating a products menu where all such pages would be housed.

For the Libram Novus pages, I included a copy of the Table of Contents (TOC) for each PDF. I asked my playtesters if I should do the same for Novus, even though the TOC is not finalized, and they agreed that I should do so, since I could always update it as I need to. So, I added a TOC page to the Novus section.

The next morning, I was looking at it, and I had a thought. I could actually hook the other 3 Novus overview pages that I had into that TOC using a plugin that I have installed that allows me to create/use wiki-style links, including aliasing the pages by making the link say whatever I want it to say. So, I updated the TOC page accordingly.

Now, that got me thinking some more…

At a previous job I held, working for a different gaming company, we had had the idea of putting one or two of our products (minus any rules information) on a wiki. Also, I know of at least one other company (who publishes a popular system) that put their core rules on a wiki as well.

So, my idea was relatively simple. Around the time that I transform the Free version of Novus into the Thrifty version (i.e. start actually charging for it), I could also start posting Novus on the website in that wiki-like format. It would have plenty of cross links between the various pages. It would make for a great resource for folks who are online, but it would take major effort for somebody to compile it back into a printable format (to print it locally or have somebody like Kinko’s do it for them). It would be much, much easier to simply purchase the Thrifty version (or the Deluxe version) and print that instead, especially since it will already be formatted nicely.

I would love to hear your opinions on this topic, and you can click on this link and give them to me on the FHG forums.

Ereader Formats

Once Novus is out of Open Beta, one of the things that I am planning on doing is making a version that is specifically formatted for and for use with ereaders. I am talking specifically about the .epub format for ereaders such as the Nook and the .mobi format for ereaders such as the Kindle, those being the two largest and most common ebook formats.

For both of these formats, I will have to completely re-pagemake the book since the InDesign files used to create the PDFs cannot be used to create the ebooks. Many of the pagemaking tips and tricks used in PDF creation just cannot be used in ebooks.

For example, in PDFs, images (and tables) are normally inserted as separate objects (which allows for them to be placed across multiple columns), and the text objects are simply flowed around the image objects. In creating an ebook, this will not work. When distilled into an ebook, the image object (or table) would simply be moved to the end of the book and not appear where you wanted it.

So this means that an entirely different philosophy and design paradigm has to be used for ebooks. It will be interesting to see how well it turns out (I may do an ebook version prior to the end of the Open Beta – if there is enough interest).

Okay, since I finally got Libram Novus #3 finished, I am back to work on the next version of the Novus Open Beta. I figured that I would discuss some of the changes/additions that I am making to it.

A New Character Class
The first change is that I am adding a new Character Class to the game, sort of.

Okay, since I finally got Libram Novus #3 finished, I am back to work on the next version of the Novus Open Beta. I figured that I would discuss some of the changes/additions that I am making to it.

A New Character Class

The first change is that I am adding a new Character Class to the game, sort of. Since the first version, we have had both the Major Adept and the Minor Adept in Novus. However, while the Mage Class has always made use of the Major Adept Talent, we haven’t used the Minor Adept.

The whole idea behind the Minor Adept Talent was to allow for the creation of a character who could cast spells from two different Schools of Magic. However, prior versions of Novus didn’t make that clear enough and so when one forum member recently asked about it, to clarify his own understanding, I decided that it was time to make it explicitly clear in the rules. And that included adding a new Character Class.

Since this new Character Class would use the same Schools of Magic table as the Mage Class uses, I decided to rename the Mage to Mage (Classic) and to name the new Class Mage(Dual). This allows me to place them side by side and to allow them to share the page with the Schools of Magic table. Keeps it nice and simple.

Basic Equipment

In making up the sample characters found in the downloads section, I found that I had issues with being able to purchase starting equipment for the characters. Now, granted, starting equipment should quite likely depend upon the campaign and the GM’s playing style, but a character should at least start with the basics.

So, I will be updating the rules with an increased list of starting equipment. I will also be decreasing, slightly, the amount of starting money, but that is okay, since the player will have the basic equipment that he will need.

The Starting Equipment will consist of the following:

Standard Pack – Contains 50′ Superior Rope, 1 canvas sack, 2 weeks of iron rations, 1 small steel mirror, 1 waterskin full of water, 1 flask of oil, 1 small lantern, 1 set of Flint & Steel, 1 Bedroll

Tools of the Trade – This will vary by Character Class, but will basically contain 2 weapons, and perhaps things like armor, musical instruments, thieves’ tools, spell books, etc.

At Belt Items – an equipment belt, 2 pouches and a dagger

Clothing - 2 outfits, cloak, and boots

Starting Money – 10 + 1d10 Silver Pieces

GM’s Option: Mount – recommended if PCs will do a lot of traveling; nothing larger or more expensive than a Light Horse (player may trade up by paying the difference), saddle, saddlebags and any associated tack (including feeding dishes)

This way, the character will have what he needs, but still be able to round things out a bit using his starting money.

Spellcasting Options

In the first game I ever designed, High Adventure Role Playing (HARP), I included a feature called “Scaling Options” I had actually gotten the idea for them from another game called HârnMaster. In that game, the spells had various effects which could be chosen from based upon your skill level in the spell. In HARP, Scaling Options increased the number of Power Points required, which in turn increase the difficulty of casting the spell by giving the casting roll a negative modifier.

I realize now that that mechanism was, to put it bluntly, stupid and amatuerish (along with a number of other aspects of the game). Oh, it was a pretty good game overall, but it my first ever attempt at writing a game so I made plenty of mistakes in doing so, and unfortunately I never got the chance to fix those mistakes.

Well, now I am writing Novus, and it is actually the fourth game that I have written (one of the other two being an unpublished revision of another game I worked on, and the other being another new system that I dropped in order to write Novus), and I have learned a lot more about game balance over the years.

Okay, enough rambling, time to get back on topic. When writing Novus, I designed the spell creation system first. And I designed it specifically with several goals in mind.

First - There would be static or Codified Spells. These would be sort of learned by rote, by basic practice. This is how apprentices are taught. They learn the basic skills first, and then they start learning the principles behind the skills (first the how, then the why, and then the expanded how). This then leads naturally into the Second point…

Second - As characters learned the underlying principles, they could then learn the Spell Bases and use these to create and cast spells on the fly. Of course, casting spells on the fly (known as Improv Casting) would cost more Spell Points and have a higher Casting Target Number, since it uses the Improv column to determine the overall costs. However, the caster could also use the Spell Bases (Codified column) to create AND Codify more spells (thus creating more Codified Spells on his own).

Third - I also designed the rules about Spell Bases so that a caster could use one of the Universal Options to unlock Codified Spells and use the Spell Base Options to alter the Codified Spells on the fly (sort of half-way between the First and Second points). This option uses the “Codified” costs, rather than the “Improv” costs.

However, I have had numerous requests for me to implement something along the lines of the “Scaling Options” from that first game I wrote. The folks who have requested it want some options in the core rules.

Therefore, I have gone back to my Spell Creation rules and looked at how this might be possible without break or damaging the rules that are already in place. The last thing I want to do is to invalidate the rules for Improv Casting or the rules for Unlocking/Adjusting Codified spells.

In designing the Spell Bases, I made sure that in almost every single instance, there was a difference between the Codified and Improv costs, and in most instances, that difference was at least 2 points or more (there are some 1 point differences).

So, my solution was actually pretty simple. Since the rules for Modifying Existing Spells uses the Codified costs (and requires that the player look up the new TN to determine the new Spell Point cost), and Improv Casting uses the Improv column, which is usually 2 or more points higher than the Codified column, I decided that could create my Casting Options using the Codified Costs + 1.

For example, Using the Spell Bases to “Unlock a spell” for adusting it increases the TN of the spell by 3. For the Casting Options, “Unlocking a spell” will add 4 to the TN of the spell.

However, I also don’t want players to have to go to Libram Novus #1 to recalculate the costs of a spell for each option, I decided to use a simple cumulative system for additional Spell Point costs. This will result in a Spell Point Cost that is higher than using the rules for Modifying Existing Spells from Libram Novus #1, but which will still be less expensive than Improv Casting.

So, basically, for every 3 points (or portion thereof) that the TN is increased, the player will have to add 1 Spell Point. The exception here will be the “Unlock Casting Options”, which has a TN increase of 4, but will only have a SP increase of +1. The reason for this is simple, this option MUST be used if any other option is to be used, as it is a required cost, but it is one that will never be used by itself. Therefore part of its cost will always be born by the first additional option selected for use.
(I hope that makes sense the way that I explained it – I know what I mean, but sometimes trying to get the concept across is difficult).

Anyways, the important thing is that these Casting Options will not break the existing spell creation rules or the rules for Modifying Existing spells. In fact, this will give players 2 different methods for modifying existing spells. One of which offers codified options, and the Spell Base option which allows for Improv modifications.

These are the biggest changes planned for the next version of the Novus Open Beta. They should be the last of any major additions/changes. I am hoping for no more than one additional Open Beta version, just to correct any errors and typos before I finalize the manuscript (and then start preparing it for epub and Print-On-Demand releases).
